Moana Birthday Party Prep!
Earlier this month, Josiah turned 6 years old! Where does the time go? He requested a Moana birthday party. Although I was intimidated at first, it ended up being a lot of fun, and we had more ideas than time. Lydia even got in on the act, creating some of the decorations in her spare time. This Week:
What I'm Cooking:
It's cooled off a little bit here. The A/C is actually getting a break once in awhile. But we're really trying not to heat up the house too much. So dinners have been super simple and light. One of the meals we prepared this week was a chili lime fajita salad. We seasoned some chicken and veggies with chili powder, cumin, lime, oil, etc and then cooked the fajita toppings. We also prepared extra marinate as a dressing and served it on a bed of lettuce. We kept ours pretty simple, but you could dress it up with tomatoes, cheese, guacamole, etc. It was light and summery.
What I'm Loving:
I'll be honest... I'm loving sleeping in. I'm a complete night owl, but being a homeschooler, I have to be up with the kids and tackling our day. We can kind of do school on our own schedule, but the afternoons/evenings are filled with team practices, etc. So I try to get us moving in the mornings.
But over the summer, that all changes. I get a chance to catch up on a ton of reading, watching TV, indulging my night owl tendencies, and sleeping in.
What I'm Reading:
Well, I started a review book, but I had to put it down. It was just too much. It's a book based on the French Revolution and right off the bat, it was just too graphic for me. It's very rare for me to not finish a book, especially a review book. So I'm really struggling to commit to it. I haven't been able to pick it up the last couple of days.
What I'm Doing:
We've had a pretty quiet week around here. Dance classes and workouts went on, but I think the kids were feeling tired like I was as well. So we spent a lot of time at home this week: board games, baking, hide and seek, water balloons.... They had a lot of fun.
What I'm Watching:
I'm back to watching Little People Big World. It's interesting to see how this family has changed and evolved. Sad at times, comforting at others. I've been doing some binge watching! :-)
What I'm Enjoying:
playing in the sprinkler... ice water... easy summer schedules... snuggling with my kids...
nights where everyone is at home...

What I Made: Lydia and I made a batch of chocolatey chocolate chip zucchini muffins. They are one of our favorites in the fall. I also carved out some time to scrap 2 pages of baseball photos.
What I'm Reading: I just finished Hope for the Weary Mom. I need this one. Check out the October Bookmarks post for the details.
What I'm Doing: We've been so busy, I can hardly catch my breath. Fall Ball finishes this week. We made a trip to the Pumpkin Patch and finished up costumes. The kids look so cute!
What I'm Watching: I had realized that Once Upon a Time has started and is already several weeks in. I'm not typically a fantasy/sci-fi fan, but I love that series.
What I'm Enjoying: fall soups... cooler weather... physics studies...

Around the World Birthday Party {Budget Friendly}
Recently my beautiful little niece turned 5 years old.
And in true Kiera fashion, she celebrated with an adventure around the world.
This party so fit her personality.
She's super smart and loves learning about the world.
So I wanted to share this fun and creative party with you,
hoping that it will inspire you for your future traveler.
Enjoy!
Kiera greeted us at the door as the custom's agent
and stamped passports for every guest.
I just love this booth her mom made.
Our first stop was France where the kids colored
and became artists under Effiel Tower decorations
This was a great way to engage the kids while waiting
for other guests to arrive.
Then it was off to China,
which my brother in law visited in college.
The kids took turns racing to see who could transfer
cotton balls with chopsticks.
We saw some creative strategies. :-)
Then on to India where the kids danced with scarves
and moved to the beat.
Finally off to smash a globe piƱata
and receive goody bags filled with a variety of treats
from around the world (Pier One treats).
The menu was global to, including:
Pizza from Italy
Fruits labeled from around the world
Thai Iced Tea
and dumplings from Russia.
My kids had a great time,
even the 10 year old!
We can't wait to travel the world again.

How to Throw a Native American Birthday Party
Back in December, my little Lydi-Bug celebrated her 8th birthday with a Native American birthday party. Now there's something you need to know about my Lydia. She's a deep thinker. She loves learning about people, history, and cultures all around the world. So when she learned that Pocahontas was a "real" princess, she became obsessed with all the historical details.
Fast forward to her birthday and you've got a little girl that wanted a Native American party. As you may recall, we hosted a Pocahontas party for her 7th birthday so some of these details have carried over from last year. But some of the ideas were new to accommodate older girls and to simply refresh the party. Hope these videos inspire you in your party planning. Enjoy!

Josiah's 4th Birthday-- Dinosaur Train Style
A couple of days ago, I shared our preparations for Josiah's Dinosaur Train birthday party. As I mentioned, he loves learning all about dinosaurs from watching PBS' Dinosaur Train and this was the perfect theme for his 4th birthday. We love this little guy and we're so happy he's a part of our family.

Dinosaur Train Party Prep
My little guy is obsessed with Dinosaur Train. Dinosaurs and Trains... how can you go wrong with a four year old? It's perfect.
I love how PBS can combine preschool entertainment and learning at the same time. And Dinosaur Train has been awesome for that. A little fun and science all rolled into one...
So when it came to choosing a theme for his birthday party this year, it was easy. Hope this video inspires you!

Star Wars Birthday Party

In the end we had a ceremony where we presented each of the kids with their certificate of Jedi training, making them official Jedi's. Now, they're off to defend the galaxy. They're well prepared, energetic, and full of sugar. At least until next year!

This past October, my little guy turned 7 years old. Seven! Seven years old! I can't believe it. I blinked and he grew up. This year, he's become obsessed with star wars, which absolutely fascinates me since he's never seen the movie. But in his mind, Star Wars is this amazing world of villians, good vs evil, and light sabers. So I caved and started planning a Lego Star War's party which actually turned out to be a lot of fun.
Princess Leia made an appearance at the party as well. She even had her own light saber to defend herself against her brother. I saw a lot of different light saber ideas on Pinterest, but in the end went with pool noodles since I knew the boys would be beating each other with them anyways. We cut the noodles in half, then wrapped the cut end in SHINY (not matte) silver duct tape. Then I added a strip of black electrical tape on the top and the bottom of the silver. Both tapes were very forgiving and easily movable if necessary.
I love planning food for these parties. What does that say about my appetite? Popcorn, veggies and dip, and pretzel rods dipped in chocolate for light sabers.
I didn't get a picture of the punch, but we made Yoda Soda: 7-Up mixed with limeade and scoops of lime sherbert floating in it. The kids thought the green color was weird, but once they tasted it, they were hooked.
And my mom came up with this one: Death Star Donuts. Chocolate donut holes purchased from the store and sprinkled with edible silver stars. Yummy!
My mom made the cake. She frosted a sheet cake and sprayed it with silver coloring from Wiltons. Then for the lego pieces, she added smaller cakes, made the nobs with marshmallows, and frosted the whole piece. We stacked them on the back of the cake and added Lego Star Wars figures as well.
To start off the party, we had an obstacle course with several items from around our house: a crawling tunnel, cones to kick a soccer ball around, a black tablecloth to run through, and bobbing for an apple at the end before tagging the next team mate. All through out the course, we had "Jedis" trying to stop the kids by whacking them with light sabers. I'm not sure who it was more fun for: the kids or the adults.
I looked up several pictures of Yoda a few days before and drew on to play Pin the Light Saber. My kids love every variation of this game and usually end up going several times.
My mother-in-law printed out several pictures of Stormtroppers and we took out Noah's nerf gun. The idea was to hit as many as they could. You could make the Stormtroppers stand or do what we did: tape them to a black tablecloth hanging from the clothesline. Either way, my little girl was going to make sure she got a good shot.
Finally it was time for cake!

It seems like all our parties lately have ended with a pinata. And this party was no exception. Although the homemade pinata turned out to be a little bit sturdier than planned and we broke the plastic bat. Plan B involved a metal bat and some very concerned parents. Don't worry. No one was hurt in the destruction of the Death Star pinata. Oh, yeah, except for the pinata.
