The Prince and the Blight {Review}

Twelve year old Lily McKinley's story continues.  After rescuing her father from the Somnium Realm, Lily longs to return.  So when Cedric the dragon reappears, she's anxious to go back.  But Cedric carries grave news: a mysterious illness has overtaken the kingdom and is threatening to destroy everything.  But what of the powerful Prince Pax?  Where has he disappeared to and why is he not stepping in to save everyone?  Lily has many questions and must return to Castle Iridyll to find the answers.  In this sequel to The Dragon and the Stone, Kathryn Butler takes us back to her beloved characters and mixes fantasy with biblical concepts, creating an exciting middle school read.

 After reading the first book in this series, I was so excited to see the author writing a sequel.  Butler keeps the story engaging and exciting, for both my 10 year old and for me.  We both loved it.  The story is sweeping, the characters are a realistic mix of integrity and flaws, and the plot carries the reader in an epic battle of good vs evil.  This series is proving to an adventurous journey through magical lands with complex characters and deeply biblical themes.  We're loving these books that are reminiscent of the Green Ember series with elements of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.  Great read!

Weekend Links ll July 22, 2022

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
We've really been in a rut the last few months so my husband found a meatless chickpea marinara dinner.  It was filled with chard and garlic, and absolutely delicious.  Plus, it was fairly simple and quick to get on the table.  Now that's my kind of meal.

What I'm Reading:
I've been looking at resources for teaching my kids about money and strong financial principles.  This week, I was ready Beyond Piggy Banks and Lemonade Stands.  It's filled with basic elementary concepts and good starting points.  My kids have moved beyond this stage, but I found the book to be a good starting place for parents to discuss money with their kids.

What I'm Doing:
We've been practicing the piano, reading, making new popsicle recipes, going to physical therapy appointments, taking dance classes, teaching teenagers about job interviews and time management.  Lots of parenting going on at my house and lots of driving the mom taxi.

What I'm Enjoying:
New fiction books...
Waterslides...
One on one dates...
Air conditioning...
Meatless meals!

Sheet Pan Science {Review}

With 25 child-friendly physics, chemistry, and biology projects, Sheet Pan Science encourages kids natural curiosity in an easy to understand format.  Each project includes simple instructions, photographs for each step, and scientific explanations behind the project.  Experiments include:
  • Ice globe volcanoes
  • Tie dye milk
  • Shrinking window gels
  • Yeasty beasts
  • and more!
Some of my favorite aspects of Sheet Pan Science:
  • Materials require common, household items
  • A collection of sensory projects all in one place
  • Explanations for every experiment in the book!
Most of these projects can be found on the internet, but there are several here that we've never seen before.  This book is marketed for ages 7-10, but these experiments would be a great addition to any preschool day as well.  They're fun, engaging, and hands-on... a great way to get your kids interested in science.

                                                                           This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
This week's favorite dinner was cheesy fish with rice and broccoli.  We love cheesy fish and it's a yummy dinner for eating healthy.  We just buy a mild white fish and season it with salt, pepper, and basil, and then add a thin layer of parmesan cheese on the top to make a crust.  So delicious!

What I'm Reading:
Oh, my reading has been all over the place this week.  I finished up Robin Hood... classic, but I've never quite read it myself so I added it to my reading list in preparation for Medieval History in the fall.  I'm also reading two non-fiction books: one about the making of atomic weapons and one about teaching your kids about money.  Random list, huh?

What I'm Doing:
One of the things I've started doing in the past couple of months is practicing the piano again.  I took lessons for years while I was in middle school and high school.  But haven't really touched it in a long time as we didn't have a piano.  When we were given a keyboard last year and I started teaching Josiah, I realized I was going to have to start practicing myself to bring it all back.  The past 2 months or so, I've been scheduling in my own practice time and really enjoying it.

What I'm Enjoying:
Piano time...
Baking...
Family game night...
Camping...
Time at the lake..

Little Homesteader: A Fall Treasury of Recipes, Crafts, and Wisdom {Review}

Part of the Little Homesteader series, this treasury is filled with recipes, projects, nature study, and so much more.  Geared for the preschool to early elementary age group, ideas in this volume are all centered around the fall season and include:
  • how make applesauce
  • how to make a birdhouse out of a gourd
  • how to make apple chips
  • saving seeds
  • crafting acorn cap candles
  • and more!
The book also describes how to distinguish one variety of apples from another, types of fall crops, information about mushrooms and herbs, along with so much more wisdom.

I have reviewed several of these titles and each time I'm delighted with each one.  They are filled with so many ideas, and contain just enough information not to overwhelm young readers, but to entice them into learning further.  Although mainly geared toward a younger crowd, my older children even loved the recipes and craft ideas.  These books would make a wonderful gift or fun addition to any home.  We love this series and are delighted to recommend them to families with young children.
