The Seed of Faith: A Christmas Miracle {Review}

It's the Christmas season and the little town of Shiloh is in the middle of a devastating drought (can anyone in California relate?).  The drought is so bad, in fact, that no one has a Christmas tree.  Just over the mountains lies another town ready to happily celebrate the holidays.  But three young boys realize how important it is to share with the people of Shiloh.  One night they decide to cross the mountains and bring Christmas to the small town, but on their journey, they encounter a raging storm unlike anything anyone's seen before.  While lost in the mountains, they meet a mysterious stranger named Josiah who brings them in, but disappears the following morning.  Will the townspeople get their Christmas miracle?

This is a sweet story that follow the lives of these young men determined to bring Christmas to the town of Shiloh.  It's a story of determination, selflessness, generosity, and miracles.  Written at a second to third grade level, The Seed of Faith is a beautiful lesson in holding to God in challenging times and focusing on the true meaning of Christmas, providing the reader with life lessons that will continue year round.

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:

Yeah for Rain!  California has sure needed it.  This week looks like we're finally getting a start on the rain we need to hopefully start climbing out of this drought.  It's been a few long hard years so we'll take every little bit we can get.

Since it's been raining, we've been craving all the soups and baking we can squeeze in.  There's nothing like coming in from the cold to a soup or stew that's been simmering all day so my crockpot has been working overtime.  My favorite this week was a pot of warm split pea soup paired with a loaf of fresh bread.

What I'm Reading:

I finally got a chance to started reading Gifted Hands by Ben Carson.  This is a man who has intrigued me for quite some time and his book has been on my TBR pile for awhile.  It's a quick read so I anticipate finishing it soon.

What I'm Doing:

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I've been trying to get a little Christmas planning done.  Beyond the party scheduling, I'm looking at details: picking up gifts here and there and stocking supplies for a few Christmas crafts.  It's going to be here before I know it and I'm trying to get ahead of the curve.

What I'm Enjoying:

Homemade granola...
Curling up with blankets...
Hot tea...
Good books...
Family board games!

Black Ballerinas {Review}

This beautifully illustrated biography collective highlights black ballerinas from early 20th century to present day.  Each of these ballerinas forged the path for today's black dancers and have inspired generations of dance.  Each two page biography shares some biographical information on the ballerina and how she inspired Misty Copeland in her own dance journey.  Coming away from this book, I have a great appreciation of the rich dance history of this country.  I wish this book would have been wrapped up better in the end, but overall, it's a beautiful collective and would make a wonderful gift for the dancer in your life.

Thursday's Child {Review}

Margaret Thursday is a very lucky girl... for an orphan.  Found on the church steps as a baby, she's taken in by two elderly sisters and their housekeeper.  Her life isn't perfect, but it's good.  Until one day, the money that always appears for her upbringing stops.  As her caretakers age, Margaret is sent to live at an orphanage.  And it's a thousand times worse than she imagined.

After crossing the matron one too many times, and learning that her new friends are in danger as well, Margaret plans a reckless escape that takes them all on a daring adventure of secrets, travel, and new found family.  But when the police start to close in, will Margaret be sent back to Matron?

I loved this book!  I had heard of Noel Stretfield before, but never read anything by this author.  Reminiscent of great childhood classics like The Secret Garden, Thursday's Child is full of adventure and mischief.  The writing style is rich with beautiful language and character development.  There are several characters introduced and each is developed well.  Margaret herself is written as strong female lead full of whit, wisdom, and independence.  The viewpoint changes often, but the author has a wonderful gift for making the story clear and interesting.

This re-released edition is part of a series that is sure to engage middle and early high school readers.  Thursday's Child stands heads and shoulders above most books out there and I'm more than happy to look for more by this author.

Weekend Links ll October 8, 2021

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:

Fall might finally be peaking its head out around here.  The mornings have been crisp and our days mild.  The garden is winding down and it feels like everything is being put to rest.  Except maybe mom.  I'm not sure we ever rest.  :-)

So soups have been sneaking their way back into our meal plan.  We had a particularly cool day earlier this week so I made a pot of lasagna soup.  This one is hardy and filling enough for the teenagers, and warm and comforting for all of us.

What I'm Reading:

My non-fiction book right now is Balanced and Barefoot.  Such a wonderful book for parenting well developed children from the early years.  Digs into the body and brain science behind spinning, climbing, exploring, jumping, going barefoot... this is a book I'd like to put in the hands of every new parent.

What I'm Doing:

We started some seedlings this week.  Not much compared to the summer, but I'd like to get to the point where I can have a small garden that changes with the seasons.

What I'm Enjoying:

Cool, crisp mornings...
Warm filling soups...
Rollerskating...
Zucchini muffins...
Kitty snuggles!

What are you up to?
