50+ Titles for Family Movie Night

*This post was first published on 3/27/20.  Enjoy!

For years, our family has done a weekly Family Movie Night.  This tradition started back when we had littles and my husband working nights.  Every Friday morning when he'd get off work, he'd take a couple hour nap and then try to readjust his internal clock for the weekend.  By Fridays, I was also tired of chasing two very active littles and just needed a moment where we were all sitting down together.  Thus our Friday night tradition was born.  Over the years, the kids have come to know the routine... always homemade pizza, always popcorn, and a movie for us all to enjoy.  Having a wide range of ages, it can be tough to find something that appeals to everyone, but the following is a list of 50+ parent approved movies for early elementary (some lower) on up through middle school.  As always use your own judgment based on your family values, but we've found this list to be mostly clean and suitable for those ages.  Enjoy!

*The Adventures of Milo and Otis
*Adventures of the Wilderness Family
*Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea
*The Aristocats
*Babe
*Because of Winn-Dixie
*The Black Stallion
*Cheaper by the Dozen (old and new)
*City of Ember
*Cool Runnings
*Daddy Day Care
*Enchanted
*Finding Nemo
*Frozen
*The Game Plan
*Girl of the Limber-lost
*The Greatest Showman
*Gus
*Heidi
*The Herbie Movies
*High School Musical
*The Incredible Journey
*The Invention of Hugo Cabret
*Little Women
*The Mandie Movies
*Mary Poppins
*Moana
*Mr. Popper's Penguins
*My Big Fat Greek Wedding
*Night at the Museum
*Nim's Island
*The Parent Trap (old is our favorite)
*Pippi Longstockings
*The Queen of Katwe
*Ratatouille
*Return to Me
*Robin Hood (Disney)
*Sarah, Plain and Tall
*The Secret Garden
*Secretariat
*The Sign of the Beaver

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
This week was a mess! :-)
We're in the throws of a kitchen remodel and cooking has been so minimal.  I tried to plan easy meals or meals that could be plugged into the crockpot and left on the patio.  My crockpot has saved me this week!

What I'm Reading:
I'm sort of in between books as far as fictional reads goes.   I just picked up The Borrowers Afloat at the library this morning and am hoping to make some progress on it this weekend.

What I'm Doing:
Washing dishes in a utility sink...
Picking up more paper plates....
Running to Grocery Outlet for last min dinners...

Can you tell I've been out of my element this week? :-)

What I'm Enjoying:
Evening walks with the kids...
Playing the piano...
Purchasing curriculum for next year...

 This Week:

What I'm Cooking:

We are in a slump.  It's a weird situation for me... wanting to get back to eating healthy, but still craving  sweets from the holidays... wanting to fill our menu with warm comforting soups, but being burnt out on our old favorites... I'm really looking for some inspiration.  Any favorite meals?

What I'm Reading:

Along the same lines of our meal planning, I'm reviewing Lysa Teurkerst's I'll Start Again on Monday.
It's along the same lines as her Made to Crave title and seems to be a good book to start the new year.

What I'm Doing:

We're working on getting back into the rhythm of homeschool.  There's been a few hiccups with dr's and dentist appointments, but we're giving ourselves grace and finding our routine.

What I'm Enjoying:

Lingering Christmas lights...
Cleaning out the garage...
Good books in the evenings...
Warm lemon water in the mornings...
Board games with the kids...

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
Oh the weather here has been cold.  Ok, not Minnesota cold, but decently cold for us.  Dropping into the 30's is cold for this mama.  So my favorite meals lately have been as much soup as I can cram into our meal plan.  And the kids have been loving it too.  Thinking of adding potato soup to our meals next week.

What's your favorite soup?

What I'm Reading:
My reading list has gotten a little out of control lately.  I'm slowly working my way through Inside American Education by Thomas Sowell.  It's very thick in content so I've been taking it slow, but so many things I didn't even know about education.

What I'm Doing:
This is our first week out of school for our Christmas break.  We've been filling our days with all the fun activities: skating, children's museum, and a snow day.

I'm thinking we need to go mini-golfing next week, but I need the weather to warm up. :-)

What I'm Enjoying:
Picking up old projects
Playing in the snow
Curling up with the kitty
Grandma's jelly cookies

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:

Tuesday was busy around here as most Tuesdays are.  Those are good crockpot nights.  So this week, we made a post of lasagna soup, swapping out the lasagna noodles for bowtie.  This is definitely a crowd favorite and one that doesn't really provide any leftovers.  Which is a total bummer when you're a homeschool family looking for a quick lunch.  But everyone was happy and full, and somewhat nourished by a hardy bowl of soup.

What I'm Reading:

I'm reading The Beginning by Beverly Lewis.  I think this is her newest title. Although still in the genre of Amish fiction, I'm finding this one to be less predictable than her prior work.  And I'm enjoying them very much. I'm about two thirds of the way through and I'm still left with lots of questions.  It's proving to be a good read in an otherwise hectic month.

What I'm Doing:

December is always busy around here.  Holiday planning is in full swing, and I'm doing my best to sit in it and enjoy.  We did a little baking this week, a little crafting, some planning for upcoming events.  And I've been thoroughly busy trying to get all this Christmas cards addressed.

What I'm Enjoying:

Late night crafting
Listening to Christmas carols
Soft Christmas tree lights in the mornings
Crockpot recipes
Homemade muffins!

Including the Kids in Thanksgiving

 *Originally posted on 11/16/15.  Enjoy!

Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday to focus on family, friends, and blessing.  It's the quiet holiday just before Christmas.  No presents, no huge holiday displays... just a thankful heart to give and receive.  And dare I say, it's one of the most important holidays on the calendar.

But for a kid, Thanksgiving can be quite lack luster.  No wrapping paper to throw off, no holiday music, cold weather and football.  How can we better include them in this important celebration?

Here are just a few ideas:

1. Create a Thankful tree-- Find a pretty vase and have the kids gather some sticks and rocks and start the tree.  Then add tags or colorful construction paper leaves.  Have the kids write down something they're thankful for, then interview others and include theirs as well.  See how many things you can find the be thankful for.

2. Have them set the table-- Thanksgiving is filled with pretty plates, cloth napkins, and shiny silverware.  It fun to set the table all fancy with vases and runners.  And it's a great time to learn about proper place settings and etiquette.  You might be surprised which of your kids gets the decorating bug.

3. Include them in creating a snack platter-- Appetizer and snack platters are fun to create with little hands.  Have them slice olives and fruit, arrange pickles, create a vegetable turkey, or mix up the dip.

4. Or a special desert-- We're making pretzel turkeys this year, but why not decorate cupcakes to go with the pie?  Or stir up a fruit dip?  My kids love helping run the mixer or learn to make homemade whipped cream.  Kids love being in the kitchen and since most deserts can be made ahead of time, including them in making desert avoids a time crunch.

5. Read a Thanksgiving book together-- Snuggling up with a good book together is always a great way to spend an afternoon.  Some of our favorites include: The Bernstein Bears Give Thanks, Turkey Surprise, The Thanksgiving Story, The Very First Thanksgiving Day, and This First Thanksgiving Day.

6. Or watch a special Thanksgiving video-- We love watching Walton's movies on Thanksgiving.  Or why not pop in old family movies and walk down memory lane.  Or create your own family movie on Thanksgiving.  Interview other members of the family.  What are they thankful for?  What do they remember about Thanksgivings past?

7. Create Thanksgiving crafts-- Create a fingerprint fall tree with the kid's fingerprints.  Make a paper bag thankful book with a turkey on the cover.  Play Thanksgiving Bingo.  There are so many turkey crafts out there.  Go browse through Pinterest.  :-)

How are you including your kids in Thanksgiving this year?

What We Have Planned for June

photo a8d369bc-4b11-444f-8edb-e3a59966347e_zps9w3qcuqn.jpg

Yay!  Summer is here and the livin' is easy.  We've been out of school for about a week and it didn't take us long to fall into a pattern of lazy mornings, afternoons at the lake, and evenings in the backyard.  We've started a few projects and even made homemade sorbet.  It's been a refreshing change from the struggle of May.

So while I'm looking at a long summer stretched before us, I know it will fly by faster than we wish.  All too soon, we'll be saying, "Where did the summer go?"  So while I'm savoring our slow days, I also have some goals to accomplish this summer.  Here's what we have on our list:

Declutter and sell homeschool items-- It's hard to believe that my "baby" is going into 5th grade.  I think I'm in denial.  But that means we've outgrown the lower elementary items and it's time to start looking to high school for my daughter.  With that in mind, I do have some curriculum to clear out and while I'm at it, I might as well try to sell some of it.  Time to get to decluttering.

Refocus on some habits-- The last few years I've been using a chore zone cleaning schedule that works well for all of us.  I shared it with you here.  However, during the school year, it gradually gets more and more lax until mom is doing 90% of the cleaning.  Time to get back into a good habit of working together.

Paint the kids' ornaments for Christmas-- Yes, I hear you.  It is a bit early.  But I know myself.  If I hold off on this one, I'll be up till midnight in December.  I already have the ornaments order.  Now it's time to get to the painting part.  I like to have these done in the summer and tucked away for giving on the night we put up our tree.

Swim Lessons-- I have one last baby to take swim lessons.  The other two have aged out and with so many days at the lake and the pool, they're doing quite well.  But my little guy missed lessons in 2020 and since we do swim so much in the summer, I'd like to see him have a refresher course.  So it's time to get back into lessons and brush up on some technique.

Camping-- The past few summers, we've tried to squeeze in more camping trips.  The time outdoors, disconnected, has really allowed us to come together.  So we're putting at least one camping trip on the books this month, with hopefully a couple more to come over the summer.

What do you have planned in June?
