Weekend Links ll September 30, 2022

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
My favorite meal this week was homemade stirfry.  My 9th grade daughter is taking Home Ec for her elective this year and it's been fun to have her in the kitchen with me more.  Plus my husband makes an incredible sauce to go on our stirfry.  It's a definite comfort food item this time of year.

What I'm Reading:
I'm about half way through Max Lucado's You'll Get Through This.  He's taking the life of Joseph and examining how trials made him into a man after God's heart.  And the hope we can glean from his story.

What I'm Doing:
Last weekend, Lydia and I had a girls' weekend.  The boys were out of town for a family birthday party and she had dance so we stayed home.  We had a few chores to get done, but most of the weekend was spent crafting and watching Road to Avonlea.  We tried new recipes, visited the food trucks downtown, and generally had a leisurely restful weekend.

What I'm Enjoying:
Opening the windows for the fall air...
Playing with our kitty...
Pumpkin spice tea...
Homemade chili...
New recipes...

The Cat Behavior Answer Book {Review}

Do you ever find yourself wondering, "Why does my cat do that???"  Why does he play with paper?  Why does she eat grass?  How do I litter box train my kittens?  The questions go on and on in the world of cats. Author Arden Moore answers a cat owner's pressing questions in this comprehensive 2nd edition of The Cat Behavior Answer book.  In fact, Moore answered all the questions I had and many that I didn't even realize I was asking.  All in a clear, common sense manner.

Our family has had cats in our household most of my life.  They have been our faithful friends, and this Cat Behavior Answer Book gave us fresh insight into their personalities and needs.  I was pleasantly surprised how thorough this book was.  It started with some basic ideas and moved into more in-depth topics.  The Q&A format, colorful photos, and interesting facts keep this book engaging from cover to cover.  My 11-year old son loved it as well.  And that's a win for Mom.

This book would make a wonderful title for the new cat owner.  However, more experienced pet owners are sure to find helpful information as well.  A great reference for anyone who loves cats!

Weekend Links ll September 23, 2022

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
Last night we made homemade tomato soup that we've adapted over the years.  We started with Pioneer Woman's recipe and over the past few years, we've made it our own.  It's so yummy and my daughter made homemade rolls to go with it.  My favorite!

What I'm Reading:
Right now, I'm reading a review book on cat behavior.  I never knew there was so much that I didn't know.  Hahaha... we're learning a ton about our Daisy.  My 11 year old son has been reading about it as well and we're adapting it as part of our science lessons.  Win, Win!

What I'm Doing:
I've been trying to get some decluttering done this fall.  The kids all have fall birthdays so our little house can fill up real quick.  Plus I've been accused of being a hoarder.  I blame it on my sentimental nature.

What I'm Enjoying:
Having the windows open at night and in the mornings...
Listening to my 11 year old sing...
Pumpkin muffins...
Learning about new artists...
our Bible curriculum...

Odder {Review}

Inspired by the real life Monterey Bay Aquarium program that partners orphaned otter pups with surrogate mothers, Odder is a humorous free verse tale told through the eyes of the Queen of Play.  Odder has spent most of her life off the coast of central California.  Until one day she has a brutal encounter with a shark that leads her to the aquarium.  While there, she is reunited with her friend and the two start an incredible journey of fostering other otter pups.

Sweet, lyrical, and charming, Odder is a beautiful story of loss and hope.  I loved how much non-fiction information was woven into the writing.  Katherine Applegate did a wonderful job balancing a lovable character with learning about otters, ocean life, rescue and rehabilitation, and so much more.  The style of writing made this a book that is easily accessible for most readers, and could be read quickly or broken in to small sections.  All in all, I loved it and can't wait to share it with my kids.  Beautiful story and very well-written.

The Animal Adventurer's Guide {Review}

Looking for a fun way to get started in nature studies?  Or just have a child who's curious about all things wildlife?  Or maybe you have one of those kids who just can't wait to get their hands on a snake?  Or follow a trail of ants in the backyard?  Then you'll find this Animal Adventurer's Guide a great place to start!

Filled with creative illustrations and 50 activities to get kids started in nature study, this guide is full of information.  Divided into categories like birds, mammals, reptiles, etc, it's a great reference for learning more about the world around us.  We loved this book.  It was a great mix between information and activity, allowing my kiddos to learn from reading and experience.  We plan to use it to expand our nature study in the coming year.

Weekend Links ll September 9, 2022

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
This week was crazy!
We went camping over a long weekend last weekend, came home on Monday, tried to get everything cleaned up and put away, and crashed!
So grocery shopping just hasn't happened.  We've been scrapping by with what's in the house and running to the local grocery outlet to fill in our dinners.
I will say while camping, I took some leftover falafel and crumbled it on a bed of lettuce, onion, cucumber, and carrots.  It was amazing!  One of the easiest and tastiest camping lunches I've ever had!

What I'm Reading:
I'm sort of between books.  Finishing up The Breadwinner today and working through The Living Page.  Both have been good, although The Living Page is making my head spin.  It's literally making me feel like a brand new homeschool mom.  Learning so much and deconstructing so much.

What I'm Doing:
We just spent 4 1/2 days camping, totally disconnected, sleeping in the cooler weather, spending the days at the lake... It was glorious!

What I'm Enjoying:
Good books...
Air conditioning (112 degrees today)...
Card games...
Auntie life...
Playing the piano!
