Weekend Links

This Week:

What I Made: Baking is my children's love language.  Lydia just loves to be in the kitchen baking anything.  And the boys love the results.  So we've been baking.

What I'm Reading: I was able to get April Bookmarks book early and absolutely couldn't put it down.  Liane Moriarty did not disappoint on this one.  Amazing!  And I'm finally #1 on the waitlist for Small Great Things.  This is amazing 'cause I was #15.  I'm hoping to pick it up soon so I'm waiting to start another book.

What I'm Doing:  We have spring fever.  Baseball season has started so we're spending lots of time on the ball field.  And I'm purging for Lent.  That's slowed down a bit so I'm hoping to catch up a little this weekend.  And we're studying Astronomy which I absolutely love.  We're just busy right now and loving it.

What I'm Watching:  We've been obsessed with The Great British Baking Show.  We've been binge watching it in the evenings while I write or edit.

What I'm Enjoying:  poetry... Astronomy... bullet planning... pilates...

What are you up to?

2017 March Bookmarks

 photo IMG_2478_zpsczopbrsn.jpg

*Bookmarks is an online book club hosted at Creative2xmom. Here we discuss the books we've read in the past month as well as the suggested reading. Our suggested reading for March was A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans.

These are the books I read this month:

What We Read With The Kids:

The third book in the Little House series, my kids were thoroughly engaged.  They are loving this series and we're anxious to pick up book four.

Part of the Who Was series, this book gave us a look at the legend of Davy Crockett.  Part man, part tall tale, we learned about his contributions to American Independence and history.  Although I must say, I may have learned more about his humanity than I wanted to know.

Our suggested reading for March was A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans--  Pursuing a different biblical virtue/ idea every month, Evans dedicates one year to exploring what the Bible really says about woman.  Just what is a Biblical Woman?  Beyond all the hype and modern interpretation, what is Biblical Womanhood?  I had never heard of Evans prior to this book, although she is a well-known blogger.  And this book really messed with me.  Although the author really put a lot of research into the book, it really played with how I look at the Bible and Christianity.  It really made me question a lot of things I've always believed and at time I honestly wanted to throw the book out the window.  There's good stuff in this book, but read it with a lot of discretion and be in the mood to wrestle with a lot of ideas.

So what are your bookmarks this month?

Tell us in the comments about the books you're chewing on. Or link up a review from your own blog. Let's share the books we're finding, good and bad. And give us your thoughts on A Year of Biblical Womanhood by Rachel Held Evans

Also don't forget to come back on April 28th as we discuss Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty.

Hope for Each Day {Review}

I love sharing nuggets of truth with my kids every day.  Most days we start our morning reading the Bible and I'm always on the lookout for devotionals that we bring the Word to life for my kids.  Some are better than others.  My favorites are those that aren't necessarily longer, but deeper.  Hope for Each Day is one of those devotionals.

Written by Billy Graham, this daily devotional reads like a dear friend speaking to another.  Told with tenderness, sincerity, and truth, each day shares a short devotional referencing several Bible versions. I love this.  Throughout the devotional, the NIV, NKJV, AMP, ESV, ICB, NASB, KJV, NLT, TLB, and The Message Bible are all used to explain God's message in beautiful detail and language.  This devotional is marketed to six to ten year olds, but I would rate it slightly higher.  Perhaps eight to twelve.  Some of the concepts are a bit more grown up.

All in all, I was delighted with the quality of this book.  Both the physical quality and the inspiration quality are of high value.  I would happily recommend this devotional to parents wishing to spend each day in conversation with their children and the Lord.

*Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.  All opinions are my own.

What I'm Reading:  I just picked up the book for Aprils bookmarks post and realized it's over 400 pages.  Oops!  It's a good thing I'm getting an early start on this one.

What I'm Watching: We've been watching Master Chef Jr.  I love seeing all the wonderful creations the kids come up.  And it always makes me hungry.  :-)

What I'm Enjoying: a break from the rain... fried rice... spin class... reading... healthy kids...

15 Chores Your 9-12 Year Old is Capable of Doing

 photo IMG_4813_zpssq1fspoc.jpg

It's hard to believe that I actually have TWO kids that fall into this age category.  When did that happen?  Over the years I've seen them grow in their capabilities and confidence.  And teaching them basic chores early on has given them a base for future skills.

Since the kids are getting older, it became time to update their chores.  And I've been amazed at what they're capable of at this age.  Of course, all these chores take time to teach.  And most importantly, they require follow through.  As the kids are learning a new skill, I must take time to work with them.  And even after I've let them go on their own, I have to often check back in.  Still teaching new chores is well worth it in the end as they gain a sense of ownership and pride, and my work load is slowly lessened.

So here are the 15 Chores Your 9-12 Year Old is Capable of Doing:

1. Use the Washer and Dryer--laundry expands in any household.  We keep our laundry routine very simple so there's not much variance.  Primarily, we work on not overloading the machine and knowing how much soap to use in each load.  We also introduce stain treatment at the latter part of this age range.

2. Pack a lunch--every child has their own personal preferences so teaching them to pack a lunch is very helpful.  When teaching my children to pack their lunches, I look for a main dish, a vegetable, a fruit, a juice, and then a treat if they'd like.

3. Understand tithing and saving--often times this is the age when children start to receive an allowance or start a part time job.  That makes it a great time to teach about tithing ten percent and saving a percentage for the future.

4. Answer and use a phone--using the phone is not only a matter of good manners, but safety should there be an emergency.  Learning the proper order of dialing, stating their name, and politely presenting their need are all important parts of learning to use a phone.

5. Garden--my kids are in the garden at an early age.  But this is the age when they really own it.  Weeding, watering, pruning, taking care of and watching something grow bring a sense of accomplishment and grow a lifelong skill.

6. Help with meals--again this is a skill that's been building from an early age, but takes on more responsibility at this age.  We build on the peeling and measuring from an earlier age and add in dicing, mixing, and recipe reading.  This is also a great age for teaching how to multiply fractions.

7. Bake--much like meal prep, baking becomes more involved at this age.  This is also the age where we start to pass on the responsibility of baking bread for dinner and muffins for breakfast.

8. Care for a pet--children can care for a pet from a young age.  But at this stage, they can take on primary responsibility of cages and tanks, feeding, and learning about the particular needs of their pet.

9. Mop floors--once sweeping is mastered, mopping comes next.  Children this age are capable of preparing mop water, mopping the kitchen and bath, and noting areas that need some extra attention.

10. Use a lawn mower--lawn mowing is a big responsibility and one we don't take lightly in our house.  One thing we keep in mind is always wearing long pants and tennis shoes.  Additionally, we ask that our kids keep track of the gas level in the mower.

11. Vacuum--vacuuming requires good control and strong muscle to move the machine.  So we wait until this age to ask our kids to vacuum.  Also at this time, we ask them to vacuum their rooms when cleaning up.

12. Start planning out long projects--seeing the bigger picture is important at this age.  So taking a project and breaking it down into do-able steps are a skill to be learned.  This can be taught through a school project, saving for a special purchase, or starting a business.

13. Help with grocery shopping--my kids love to help with the shopping.  This is a great chore to learn about weights and measurements, budgeting, comparing ingredients, meal planning and more.  The grocery store is also a great place to learn about needs vs wants.

14. Clean bathroom--up to this point, kids have been learning the elements of cleaning the bathroom: sweeping, wiping down counters, and mopping.  Now they're being responsible to put it all together and clean the bathroom.  Of course, with lots of follow up.

15. Prepare a family dessert--dessert is a great place to start for kids wanting to help with meals.  This is a great dish to start on some independence.  Allow your 9-12 year old to pick the dessert (within reason), manage the recipe, and take primary ownership of the dish.  Assist only when requested.

Easter Basket Filler Ideas

*This post was originally published on 3/29/11.  Enjoy!

March is quickly coming to an end and April is nearly upon us.  It's hard to believe that spring has arrived already.  If it weren't for the calendar reminding me that the weeks are flying by, I wouldn't believe it myself.  Weren't we just celebrating Christmas?

I sat down the other day to do some planning for Easter.  And at the top of the list was Easter baskets.  I've already been picking up little things here and there.  I don't think Easter has to be overkill on gifts.  Just a little something for the thrill.  My kids' favorite items last year were the used books from the library sale.

But to get all our creative juices going, here are a few ideas for filling those Easter baskets this year:

Babies and toddlers:
Swim diapers
Bath books
Colors and coloring books
Dress up
Craft items
Towel and swimsuit
Bubble machine and bubbles
Sprinkler

School age:
Jacks
Jump Rope
Dress up
Baton
Craft items
Cars
Diving Sticks
Towel and swimsuit
Gardening tools
Craft items

Pre-teens:
Gardening tools
Makeup
Scarf and earrings
Journal and pretty pen
Craft items

For all ages:
Sunscreen
Snacks
Books
Music
Gift certificates

What special surprises are you planning for your kids this year?

Christ Centered Easter Books

Easter is one of my favorite holidays.  Spring is just around the corner, the days are lightening up, and we're all getting just a bit giddy.  It's the promise of new life and sunshine just around the corner, grass is turning just a bit greener and the trees are showing off new green shoots.

Easter is all about new life, ... redemption, ... second chances, ... hope!

So I love to fill our home library with children's books that reflect that feeling of new beginnings and fresh starts.  Additionally, I look for books that announce the HOPE of the season.

These are just a few of our favorites:

The Easter Story by Patricia A. Pingry

The Berenstain Bears and the Easter Story by Jan & Mike Berenstain

God Gave Us Easter by Lisa Tawn Bergen

The First Easter by Carol Heyer

Easter in the Garden by Pamela Kennedy

The Parable of the Lily by Liz Curtis Higgs

What do you read during the Easter season?
