The Emotional Lives of Teenagers {Review}

Written by best-selling author, Lisa Damour, The Emotional Lives of Teenagers walks parents through the inner lives of todays' teenagers as they navigate the ups and downs of this transitional stage.  In the teenage years, emotions run high, leaving kids and parents both feeling anxious and overwhelmed.

This guide helps parents:
*learn to identify what's normal and when to look for help
*understand the true definition of mental health and how to foster it
*develop the best connection strategies for reaching their teens
*and more!

I really apprecitate that Damour used real life examples and strategies both from her counseling practice and her own parenting journey.  It's refreshing to hear from an author who shares both her triumphs and her struggles in reaching teens, and what she's learned from both.  Additionally, the book hits on practical application and not just theoretical ideas.

However, this is one of those books that I had to read with some discernment.  Damour addresses some modern issues in parenting and rather than encouraging parent to guide teenagers, she asserts that parents should be open to the teenagers' leading.  This can be a concerning issue as parents generally possess life experience that could help equip teenagers and in this case is disregarded.

All in all, I found many helpful strategies and insights in The Emotional Lives of Teenagers.  The author did a great job identifying emotions and how to handle them, both in the teen's life as well as the parent's.  Her definition of mental health and how to foster it was particularly interesting and helpful.  Just read with your brain on.

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
My favorite dinner this week was stuffed peppers.  My little guy was at winter camp and doesn't like stuffed peppers so we decided to bake them while he was gone.  They are so good!  I love that my teenagers enjoy them as much as we do.  Partnered with a pan of cornbread and we have a delicious meal.

What I'm Reading:
This week, I read The Architect and it came away with mixed reviews in our home.  Not my favorite, but my 11 year old liked it.  It was a little slapstick for me and I'm coming away from it slightly deflated.

What I'm Doing:
We've had the week off from homeschool so we've been filling our time with fun things and come catch up planning for mom... grading, planning, and a little prep for next year.  Currently, we're on snow watch 'cause we're supposed to get a light dusting today and the kids are super excited.  It's a rare treat!

What I'm Enjoying:
Cozy blankets in the mornings...
Cuddling with the kitty...
Canning blackberries...
Baking...
Learning new piano songs...

The Architect {Review}

Phantom City's motto rings: "Never be about when the Zeppelin is out."  Till one night, twelve year old Charlie comes face to face with the Zeppelin and instead of being abducted, she's awakened.  And everything she's suspected suddenly comes to light.

In a world of super villains, propaganda, and sinister schemes, Charlie must rely on the mysterious Architect and a quirky group of heroes in order to save Phantom City and unlock her past.  When villains  kidnap residents and use them to run a production factory, Charlie risks it all to restore order.  But can she really rely on the Architect?  And who will protect him when he's targeted for elimination?

This offbeat superhero book wavers somewhere between the past and the present with old Hollywood film stars and voice activated computers.  There are multiple historical and cultural references that may go beyond a typical middle graders comprehension, but all in all, the characters and main plot were easy to follow.  The main character, Charlie, is insightful, although she carries a slight attitude throughout the book.  The basic plot serves as an allegory for the redemption story without being overly preachy and the characters are mostly likeable.  There was some unnecessary potty humor in the book that I didn't appreciate, but the rest was decently written.  My 11 year old enjoyed The Architect and recommends it.  I thought the story was ok, but there are better options on the market.

Top 10 Winter Field Trips

*This post was originally published on 1/18/16.  Enjoy!

 photo IMG_0097_zpsa6bf7175.jpg

The months of January and February always make me anxious about homeschooling.  The excitement of the holidays has passed and summer vacation feels so far away.  It's the cold winter days of being stuck indoors and stuck in a rut.  So to combat the doldrums of the winter months, we've brainstormed a list of Winter Field Trips to get us through to warmer days and spring break.

1. The Planetarium--We love attending our local planetarium.  There are a variety of shows to learn about everything from Egyptian civilizations to the seasons to constellations.  We have a show scheduled for February exploring the moons and planets.

2. Ice Skating--Why not take advantage of the season? Combine that extra energy, the cold weather, and PE time to try something new.

3. Local Art Exhibits--Check out your local art gallery for new artists and styles for your kiddos.  Some local galleries will even have special events with the artist and hand-on opportunities.

4. The Grocery Store--This is a fun location for the winter when so many of us are stumped for seasonal produce.  Many grocery stores will offer tours of behind the seasons locations including the freezer, deli, and storage areas.  Most also offer free samples of produce and lunch.

5. Craft Store Activity--Michael's, Jo-ann's, and many local craft stores offer in store classes and activities based on the seasons and holidays.  Check out local craft stores, ceramic stores, and bookstores as well for activity times and sales.

6. Indoor Pool--Find an indoor pool.  Even if you're not a gym member, most will offer a special daily rate.  This is another great way to break up the day and get that extra energy out.

7. Local Factory Tour--You would be surprised how many of these hidden gems there are.  We've toured jelly bean, cheese, and handicraft factories.  Samples and coupons are often included as well.

8. Local Government Building-- Contact your local police department, fire department, or city officials office.  Ask your children to prepare a list of questions before hand as these are wonderful opportunities for learning about local government.  And if you're lucky enough to live near a state capital, make sure to take a tour.

9. Library--Explore the library even if you've been there a million times before.  A behind the scenes look at how books are sorted, categorized, and archived will give you a unique look into your local library.  It might also help you discover a new part of the library that you've never noticed before.

10. Virtual Online Tours--There are countless virtual tours and field trips online.  Studying Early American history?  Look for a tour of Plymouth.  Studying plants?  Look for a field trip online about bee keeping or crop rotation.  The sky is the limit with field trips right on your computer.  Bonus: No gas money or travel expenses.

So what about you?  How are you combating the winter doldrums?
And what are your favorite winter field trips?

Weekend Links ll February 3, 2023

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
The best meal we had this week was Greek Stirfry and the best part is that we made the whole thing on sheet pans.  Chicken, red potatoes, zucchini, onion, cherry tomatoes and an amazing spice blend.  The first time we made it, my 17 year old decleared it the best meal of his life.  It's been a reoccuring dish on our menu ever since.

What I'm Reading:
I finally started The Emotional Lives of Teenagers.  I'm reviewing this one for the author and I think I'll take my time working my way through it.  With two teens and a pre-teen in my house, I can certainly learn a lot in this area.

What I'm Doing:
Ever since the beginning of the year, I've been trying to get my 11 year old outdoors more.  We've taken on the 1000 hours outside challenge sothat means gloves, hats, and afternoon bike rides.  I have to admit that I've really started looking forward to that hour or so when we ride and talk.

What I'm Enjoying:
Blanket basket by the couch...
Green Ember books...
Logic games...
Picture books...
Playing the piano...
