It's no secret that I value marriage. Marriage is a topic that I've written about extensively here and even ran a series on 52 First Dates. I've tried to walk out a healthy relationship with my husband and over the years, that's leaked into this space as well. So it should come as no surprise, that I was delighted to review this book on... marriage.
Love Unending, by Becky Thompson, is a 21 Day challenge to view your marriage in a fresh light. Each chapter is includes a quick devotional, action steps, a beginning prayer (that often sparks deeper conversation), and reflection questions. Interspersed through out is blank space for journaling and further reflection. Topics include:
- Speaking with Kindness
- Praying Constantly
- Listening with Purpose
- Fighting Fair
- Honoring your Spouse
- and more!
I really liked that the writing spoke from the heart and didn't gloss over the messiness for marriage. It's tough building a life with someone. There will be misunderstandings. It's nice to know that someone else has been there. And made it through to the other side.
I also appreciated that the chapters had concrete action steps that could be enacted right away. These were simple points that allowed for action in that very same day, not to be held off for date night, but put into motion from the start. So much of marriage is about the every day, not just the special days.
When I received this book, I was excited to start using the suggestions right away. And I noticed how much they were about me and not my spouse. We both share in the health of this marriage, but it's a great reminder that problem solving, or marriage maintenance, begins with me. Similar in feel to the Kindness Challenge, this book made a huge difference in our relationship right away. And I'm happy to return to it's concepts again and again. A great place to start!
