This Week:

What I Made:  We're still making lots of hummingbird food for our sweeties.  I've also been working on some scrapbooking projects.

What I'm Reading:  I'm reading a book about developing the emotional, social, spiritual side of our kids and helping them reach healthy milestones.  It's making me paranoid.  :-(

What I'm Doing:  We're celebrating my nephew's birthday this weekend.  The kids and I went on a field trip this week and we've been baking.

What I'm Watching: Hahaha... I got caught up in this season's Bachelor.  I don't usually watch it, but heard there was some controversy over the Bachelor himself.  And once you start watching a train wreck, it's hard to stop.

10 Easy Ways to Go Green

Going green doesn't have to be complicated.  In fact, going green is simply a million little baby steps stacked up over time.  So if you're looking a few more baby steps, these are some simple ways we're adding green into our home these days.  And despite the initial investment, these baby steps have saved us a little money as well.  Saving green while going green?  I'm in!

*Replace Disposable Sandwich Bags--If you have kids packing school lunches, disposable baggies can add up quickly, both in cost and trash.  We've found that our reusable sandwich boxes have lasted us for years and are easily cleaned in the dishwasher.  There are quite a variety available including these soft bags from Mixed Bag Designs.

*Replace Disposable Snack Cups--There's a HUGE variety of snack cups available from characters to portion control to stainless steel.  You name it, you can find it.  And with the amount of snacks a kid eats, these pay for themselves quickly.  Not a parent?  I love these for packing my own snacks in smaller portions.

*Carry a Reusable Water Bottle--We all need to be drinking more water and it's so tempting to pick up a plastic water bottle on a hot day.  But investing in a water bottle will keep you from buying all that plastic and save you some money in the long run.

*Stop using Paper Towels--I love using microfiber clothes to clean in my home.  They clean very well and are easily laundered.  For spills in the kitchen, I keep an extra supply of washable dishrags as well.  For about the past three or four years, we've been virtually paper towel free and going strong.

*Ditch the Plastic Grocery Bags--Our grocery store sells these inexpensively and even rewards customers for using them.  We get so much off our bill for each bag we bring in.  It's been a great incentive for remembering to bring our bags.

*Invest in Cloth Napkins--There's such a variety of colors, designs, and sizes, from very basic to these bright colorful napkins pictured here.  We have a couple of sets of dark colored napkins for family nights and a set of fancier napkins for fun.

*Use a Reusable Coffee Cup--These single cup coffee pots have become so popular, but that little cup gets thrown away every time.  What a great idea to keep all that plastic out of landfills!

*Purchase some Reusable Produce Bags--These too come in a variety of sizes including bags with smaller holes for spices and bulk items.  And because they're so light weight, produce bags don't add to the cost of your items.

*Use the Backside of Every Piece of Paper--As a homeschooling family, we go through a lot of paper, printing projects or logs to be turned in.  Or those times when I hit print before realizing this wasn't quite the file I was looking for.    All that paper goes into a pile on my desk to be reused for math problems or grocery lists or handmade cards.

*Bring Your Own To-Go Containers--Going out to dinner?  Why not take along your own to-go container?  With the variety available today, there are even collapsible containers that can fold flat until after dinner.  And you won't have to worry about throwing away the styrofoam container after you have your leftovers.

How are you taking steps to going green?

10 Ways We've Been Saving Money Lately

Our family of 5 lives on a TIGHT budget so we're always looking for ways to save money.  Whether big or small, it all adds up.  And if we keep thinking creatively, we can come up with some great ideas for saving money.  These are just a few of the ways we're saving money:

*Packing lunches/dinners when we're at baseball games--In the spring and fall, our boys play baseball and the games ran from evenings or Saturdays.  And feeding a family of 5 at the concession stand at least twice a week can add up quickly.  So when we have baseball games, we have a couple of easily packed meals that we prep ahead and take with us.  That and water bottles leaves room in the budget for an occasional treat.

*Reviewed a couple of books and got something new to read--You guys know I review books here quite often.  It serves a double purpose.  I get a chance to share books with you from some of my favorite authors.  And it helps curb my book budget.

*Kept up with our library books and didn't incure any fees--We're a homeschool familyand all big readers.  So our library checkouts (and fees) can add up quickly.  Lately we've renewed our efforts to keep up with our library account and keep fees from occurring.

*Made a new batch of laundry soap--Several months ago, my mom bought us a big jug of laundry soup.  But it recently ran out and I got back to making my homemade laundry soap.  It saves us a ton of money and cleans our laundry very well.  Little bit of time and effort saves us quite a bit.

*Took our water bottles while running errands around town--All of us are big water drinkers.  And with running errands it's so easy to pick up a few bottles of water and watch the money add up quickly.  So we carry our reusable water bottles with us everywhere.  It's healthier than a soda from the drive through and cheaper than a run into the grocery store.

*Used a coupon to make birthday invitations--Most of my kid's birthday invitations are homemade.  They always come up with crazy themes and I have to adapt.  But I usually start with a basic card from Jo-ann's or Michael's.  So as the kids are picking their themes, I watch for a coupon in the mail before I pick up my supplies.

*Used credit card points for Christmas presents--Our credit card offers Amazon points so we'll often put everyday purchases on ours and pay it off each month.  As the year progresses, I start watching our points in June or July.  I keep a running wish list of items the kids want and budget the majority of it within our credit card points.

*Using cloth napkins--I never have liked using paper napkins for the disposable factor.  So recently we used some of our credit card points to invest in cloth napkins.  We're slowly building up a small stockpile and using them for our family, saving both money and being green.

*Turning down the heat--It's winter and the heater could run frequently if we're not careful.  So we've been turning the heat down to 65 degrees, with the heat only running minimally at night.  During the day, we layer clothing and slip into wool sock and slippers.

*Soaking and cooking dried beans in the crockpot--Cooking your own dried beans can save a ton of money.  And it's incredibly simple.  So when I'm cooking recipe that calls for beans, I cook my own in the crockpot.

We're constantly looking for ways to save money.  So we consider it a journey and really a lifestyle change.

How are you learning to save money lately?

Saving Money by Using Cloth

 photo IMG_1940_zps59fb41d2.jpg

This going green journey has been and continues to be a step by step process.  Some days I feel like I still have so far to go.  But when I sit back and look, I realize we have taken several steps in saving the environment and saving a little green in our wallet as well.  These are just a few ways we're saving money by not using disposables:

Dish clothes and microfiber clothes--For the most part, I use microfiber and other clothes in my kitchen and cleaning.  They last a long time and are easily washed with the rest of our laundry.

Paper towels--I can't remember the last time I bought paper towels.  We keep lots of hand towels hanging in our kitchen and bathroom and make sure to rotate and wash them frequently.  I love the feeling of cloth and don't get the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach every time I throw away a paper towel.  For cleaning, I use my microfiber clothes.

Paper plates--Paper plates are easily converted to the dishes many of us already have in our cupboards.  The one exception for us is birthday parties.  Otherwise, we use our nice dishes day in and day out.

Napkins--For the most part, we don't use paper napkins either unless we have a few left over from birthdays.  We are slowly building a cloth napkin stash.  If you don't currently have the money to invest in nice napkins, consider cutting your own from material as you build your inventory.

Diapers--We have since switched to cloth diapering with our third child and realize that it saves us a ton of money.  The initial investment can be steep so check out your local craigslist site and sites like babysteals.com and babyhalfoff.com

Nursing pads--Initially these didn't work for me, but as my supply leveled out, I was able to use them.  They're soft and still reasonably thin.  And saved us a ton of money.

Changing mats--The changing mat that came with our diaper bag worked great in public places.  It was easily cleaned and always with me when I needed it.

Things I'd like to switch over, but haven't:

Baby wipes--Homemade baby wipes can be really inexpensive.  I've heard of several moms who've used the thin baby washcloths and throw them in when washing diapers.  Plus it's free of many unknown chemicals.

Sanitary napkins--I hear great things about Mama cloth and as I'm trying to use less and less tampons, I'd like to invest in some.  With pads being a reoccurring cost every month, I can see how this would easily save us some money and less our exposure to harmful chemicals.

So those are just a couple of ideas to encourage us all.
