This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
This week we got into the fall spirit and baked a yummy batch of pumpkin chocolate chip muffins.  Nothing says fall to me like pumpkin flavored baked goods.  That is definitely the flavor of fall.

What I'm Reading:
I'm currently reviewing Sally Clarkson's new book: Giving Your Words.  I find that I'm highlighting passage after passage.  It's so rich and full of encouragement.  I'm only about a quarter of the way through so I'm reserving judgement for now.  But exited to see where this book goes.

What I'm Doing:
We've been spending these cooler evenings walking as a family and then gathering around the dinning room table for a board or card game.  It's been lots of good family time.

What I'm Enjoying:
Visiting with the neighbors in the evenings...
Watching ballet class...
Picking up kids from youth group...

Unbreakable: The Spies Who Cracked The Nazi's Secret Code {Review}

This true story of the WWII code breakers will bring history alive for your middle school and high schoolers.  As Hitler terrorized Europe, a group of code breakers, spies, and navy men raced against time to crack the Enigma encryption machine.  These brave men and women often found themselves fleeing in the middle of the night in war torn Europe, only to re-establish their work elsewhere and continue cracking the code.  As Nazi forces directed their efforts over the radio, a group of highly skilled workers labored over the Enigma, eventually turning the tide on WWII.

Although nonfiction, this book often read like a novel, calling these real heroes to life.  There's so much history here that I had no idea about.  And the author keep the action going with introducing the reader to a variety of characters all working for the same cause.  The book does cover a vast amount of information which can be overwhelming, but I was hooked by the action early on.  Unbreakable goes beyond your typical WWII book, taking a look at some of the events in the 1920's & 30's that lead up to this point.  Although marketed to middle schoolers, high schooler and adults could easily benefit from the information presented in the book.  Author Rebecca E.F. Barone does an amazing job weaving together this great piece of history.

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
Last night we made a yummy dish we call Blackbean Skillet.  It was my 17 year old son's birthday and this meal is one of his favorite dishes.  Didn't take much to convince my husband and I as we all love Blackbean Skillet.  It's a yummy comfort dish with burger, beans, tomato sauce, salsa, spices, and bowtie pasta.  And then we top it with sour cream and avocado... it really is wonderful.

What I'm Reading:
Currently, I'm reading a book about code breakers from WWII.  It's a young adult nonfiction, but I'm learning a lot from it as well.  Hoping to share my review with you soon.

What I'm Doing:
We have been decluttering like crazy.  For some reason, we've all caught the bug of simplifying.  Unfortunately, several of us are sentimental as well and it's been quite a process of cherishing the memories and letting go of the stuff.

What I'm Enjoying:
Evening walks...
Cool mornings and opening windows...
Family game nights...
Christian Light's Home Ec curriculum...
Bible history...

The Orchard {Review}

The Hostetler family has tended their orchard for generations and look forward enjoying its beauty for many years to come.  Twins Ellie and Evan are the last children at home and the family fully expects Evan to take over the business.  But when his draft number is drawn, Evan makes the difficult decision to enlist.  Amid the tensions of the Vietnam war, Ellie's world starts to shift as well.  Between her love for the Orchard and thinking of her future, she must find her way, all while awaiting for her brother's safe return.

Beverly Lewis' newest title, The Orchard, introduces the idea of what happens when a young man from a pacifist community goes off to war.  What drives his decision?  How does his community react?  And how does a family survive when a son goes off to war?

I loved how honest this book was about a parents' emotions.  Being a mom of an older teen, I often wonder if I could have done more in the time I've had.  The chapters written from a parents perspective were relatable and rang true to what a lot of us feel.  Ellie was also a relatable character as she often struggle with her brother's decisions and still missed him tremendously.  Lewis did a good job of combining the emotions of pain, fear, and longing in the Hostetler family.

Overall, I enjoyed the plot twist in this one.  The beginning was a little slow and I had to commit myself to seeing it through.  But this book definitely took a different look at Amish life that hasn't been explored in Lewis' earlier works.  A good book for anyone who enjoys Amish fiction.

This Week:

What I'm Cooking:
This week we made lettuce wraps and they are a favorite.  Plus they're pretty easy to adapt for different nutritional needs in our family.  The teenagers load theirs up with a little bit more rice while the adults go more meat heavy.  But I will say the leftovers were gone in no time. :-)

What I'm Reading:
I just finished Max Lucado's You'll Get Through This.  Lucado takes you through the life of Joseph and all the obstacles he faced, as well as how those life lessons apply to our lives today.  As I flipped to the back of the book, I realized there were some great discussion questions and I used them to reflect on what I was reading.  Much more uplifting than I expected.

What I'm Doing:
We took a pause briefly this week.  My husband had the flu for a couple of days and then it passed on to my daughter, and finally, I've been slightly under the weather.  So while we're been "doing" school, it's been in starts and stops.  Yes, school is there, but it will be there next week as well.  So this week has been less about "doing" and more about resting and recovering.

What I'm Enjoying:
Open windows...
Encouraging podcasts...
Decluttering...
Slow mornings...
Homemade muffins...

An Amish Christmas Star {Review}

This three story collection seeks to celebrate the joys of Christmas and the traditions of the Amish heritage.  Authors Shelley Shepard Gray, Charlotte Hubbard, and Rosalind Lauer have combined their efforts in crafting this celebration of coming home for the holidays and being with friends and family.

*Buggies, Trains, and Automobiles by Shelley Shepard Gray tells the story of John and Ellie trying to make their way from Florida to Ohio, and along the way, they meet quite an interesting cast of characters. From a missed bus to train sickness, to finding themselves sheltering in a church for the evening, these two are in for an adventure.  And perhaps find loving in their misadventures.

*In Star of Wonder by Charlotte Hubbard, Raymond has set off to find his own way as an artist when he meets Mennonite Lizzie, an over enthusiastic store clerk.  But when he faces opposition from his Old Order Amish bishop, will love and grace find a way to restore relationships?

*Starlight Everlasting by Rosalind Lauer shares the story of Luke and Rachel, struggling to help her family after the devastating loss of Rachel's mother.  Facing their first Christmas apart, the couple must wrestle with the challenge of moving and starting over.

All three stories shared the common themes of family, God's will, and finding romance.  And they were all connected with a star theme as well.  My favorite of the three was certainly Buggies, Trains, and Automobiles as the storyline was fresh and original, and the characters of John and Ellie were well-written.  Each novella was unique in its own right and made for a nice collection just before the holidays.  Collections like this make for a refreshing read during the holiday season as they can be read in short snippets of time and refocus the reader on the joys of the season.  Overall, I enjoyed this title and was delighted to be introduced to a couple of new authors.

What We Have Planned for October

 Yay!  October is one of my absolute favorite months.  The weather is finally cooling down.  We can be in the backyard more.  The evenings are perfect for fires in the fire pit.  And... my oldest son and I both celebrate birthdays in October.  It really is the perfect month!

So while I'm looking at the perfect month on the calendar, I'm trying to make sure I'm intentional with my time.  With three active kids, this month has a tendency to fly by if I'm not careful. So I'm purposefully placing certain activities on the calendar NOW.  Here's a few things we're planning:

*Family Photos:  I purposed last year that we were doing family photos this fall.  I didn't know how I was going to get everyone on board, but I gave them a few year's notice to let it settle in.  We haven't taken real family photos in nearly 13 years and it's the last year my oldest will be living at home.  So I'm bound and determined to make it happen.  Might be in November, but we won't be going into the holidays without family photos.

*Going to the Pumpkin Patch: Again, it's just a classic fall family tradition.  We take the same photos on the hay bales and pick a pumpkin to match each child's unique personality.  And Mama always ends with an ice cold lemonade.  Simple, sweet, and perfect.

*Hiking Lassen Peak: I've tried for the last couple of Octobers to make this one happen.  And something always comes up.  So this year, I'm making a backup plan for my backup plan.  This adventure is taking priority and I will find a way to make it happen.  I can already see my schedule trying to push it out of the way, but I'm not letting it happen.  October is the perfect month to tackle this hike and I'm hanging on to this year.

*Painting the Kids' Christmas Ornaments: I started painting the kids Christmas ornaments last month and I have one almost finished, and one about half way down.  I'd like to see all three done by the end of the month so I can tuck them away for safe keeping until Christmas.

What do you have planned for the month of October?
